Read-only and Formula Fields on Forms

Formula fields, lookup fields and system fields like Date Created will display as read-only, and can be used on forms to display static or dynamic/record-specific labels or data on forms.  Ex. a Text Formula field can display static or formula-driven text, or Rich Text Formula field for text and background colors.  These tools can add content and data to your forms without changing your master template.  Text fields with default values can give form completers instructions that they can overwrite in the field input.

Formula Fields

Sometimes paper forms have “Total” or similarly calculated fields where the form completer is supposed to add up the inputs to other fields (like “# of Allowances”) and input the “Total Allowances”.  To avoid user calculation errors in those cases, consider creating a Formula field in Quickbase that does the calculation and use that field in the calculated field on the form.  It will display as read-only and blank when the user completes the form, and it will calculate and populate in the form pdf correctly when the user submits the form, because Quickbase has to calculate the total in the new record before it can display it on the form.
